Bodies Of Water (series), 2023
Silver prints developed with Arctic seaweed.
3 + 2AP, 40 cm x 50 cm each
Photographed in the Arctic, these works depict various states and transformations of water. At times evoking a visceral quality, these aqueous forms can mirror textures found in the human body. During the polar expedition, Elise Guillaume discovered seaweed washed ashore on a beach and chose to use it to create a photographic developer. This led her to process both her photo negatives and prints using this plant-based developer, a low-toxicity alternative to traditional chemicals used in photographic processes.
The title of this series draws on Astrida Neimanis' concept of hydrofeminism, as articulated in her essay Hydrofeminism: Or, On Becoming a Body of Water (2012), particularly her call for multispecies solidarity and interconnection across watery bodies.
Produced in collaboration with LMNO Gallery (Brussels).
